Certificate in Cinema Therapy
+ 14 CE Credits
Movies affect us powerfully because the combined impact of music, dialogue, lighting, camera angles, and sound effects enables a film to bypass ordinary defensive censors in us. They draw us into the viewing experience, but at the same time - often more easily than in real life - afford a unique opportunity to retain a perspective outside the experience, the observer's view. Cinema Therapy takes advantage of a movie’s impact and teaches watching films with conscious awareness. Like dream work, inquiries into emotional responses to movies open a window to our soul.
This first-of-its-kind program offers the unique opportunity to receive a comprehensive education in Cinema Therapy and to get certified in this field. The course teaches how the power of movies affects in the therapeutic process of adults as well as children and adolescents. Students also learn about transformational effects of films through Positive Cinema Therapy. It includes three online courses and a 20-minute interview with Dr. Birgit Wolz and an extensive listing of therapeutic themes and relevant movies.
- Upon completion of the three courses, you will receive a ready to be framed certificate of completion for your course of study, "Cinema Therapy."
- You do not have to complete a package or a course in one sitting.
- You can complete these courses in more than one session over a three-year period.

Certification in Treatment and Education
Through the Movies
+ 30 CE Credits The combination of images, music, dialogue, lighting, camera angles, and sound effects in a film mimic thoughts and feelings that occur in our consciousness. Movies draw us into the viewing experience, but at the same time afford a unique opportunity to retain a perspective outside the experience, the observer's view. Therefore films are particularly well suited to facilitate the therapeutic process, to depict psychological phenomena, and to discuss ethical dilemmas.
This first-of-its-kind program offers the unique opportunity to receive a comprehensive education in Treatment and Education through Movies, to get certified in this field, and receive CE credits. The course teaches how to use the power of movies in the therapeutic process of adults as well as children and adolescents. Clinicians also learn to integrate the transformational effects of films into their work through Positive Cinema Therapy. They deepen their knowledge of the complex and sometimes dry information in the DSM through movie descriptions in an enjoyable and emotionally engaged way. And students of this program will be able to apply their decision-making process to legal and ethical considerations through the presentation of a series of film vignettes and ethical commentary on these vignettes. The sections Therapeutic Ethics in Movies and Therapeutic Boundaries in Films fulfill California and other states' ethics and law requirements. These parts of the program may qualify for an insurance discount. The entire certificate program includes six online courses and a 20-minute audio interview with Dr. Birgit Wolz and an extensive listing of therapeutic themes and relevant movies.
